Flipping ‘eck
New world record set for most burgers flipped simultaneously
Thursday, 16th August: As one big sporting tournament draws to a close, another begins, with the Burger Flipping Championships being held in Covent Garden, London. It was there that the world record for the most burgers flipped simultaneously was set at 1,350 flips by 18 people in under a minute.
The event celebrated the art of barbeque cooking at its most competitive and was held by food and entertainment channel Food Network UK to celebrate their ‘On Fire’ festival in Covent Garden this coming weekend.
Other records broken at the Burger Flipping Championships included the most burger flips by one person in under a minute at 87 flips as well as the highest burger flip which reached 5.5 feet.
The Burger Flipping Championships had strict rules in place, tasking participants to successfully turn the burger over from one side to another using only a spatula with one hand, as many times as possible in under a minute. Burgers that fell on the floor were ruled out.
Nick Thorogood, Senior Vice President of Content & Marketing for Food Network UK EMEA says: “Barbeques are synonymous with summer and a perfect way to make the most of the current good weather. As we reach the peak of summer we wanted to get Brits in the mood and hone their burger flipping techniques – the Food Network on Fire Festival is a chance for the British public to sample the best in chargrilling from around the UK.”
One of the world record setters commented, “I’m often referred to as the King of Barbeques, so this event was right up my street – once you get your technique right you can flip hundreds of burgers. I can’t wait to tell my friends that I am a world record holder”
For members of the public who want to get involved, The Food Network On Fire Festival is free and held at the East Piazza of Covent Garden. The festival will be open from Friday 17th August 1pm to 10pm, Saturday 11am to 8.30pm and Sunday 10am to 6pm and the public will be able to try their hand at a host of cooking skills.
The festival will bring together some of Britain’s best-loved TV chefs including Jun Tanaka, Andy Bates, Lotte Duncan, Jenny Morris and Tristan Welch who will demonstrate their tasty skills. Over 15 of London’s restaurants will be serving their best BBQ fayre with plenty of sizzling cuisine for guests to tuck into.
